Should You Really Take Dietary Supplements?

Health experts claim that dietary supplements can never replicate all the nutrients and benefits that can be obtained from consuming real fruits and vegetables. In fact, these are only intended to “supplement” an individual’s diet. Supplements are available in capsules, pills, powders, extracts, liquids and gel tabs. Taken by mouth, dietary supplements must be administered based on the recommended dose often indicated on label.

Most people wonder if they really need to take dietary supplements. The answer depends on the needs of a person. Eating a balanced and healthy diet can provide the body with all the necessary nutrients, but since not everyone has access to a balanced diet, even if they have three regular meals a day, taking multivitamins might help maintain excellent overall health.

If you are generally healthy and you eat a wide selection of foods including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, lean meats and legumes, most probably, you do not need to take dietary supplements. On the other hand, if you do not eat healthy foods in the right amounts, it is certainly right for you to have supplements at hand.

Here are some important things to remember when taking dietary supplements.

  • Make sure to eat healthy foods and take the multivitamins along with your regular diet.
  • Consume more fruits, vegetables, fish, low-fat dairy products, nuts, legumes, lean meats and other nutritious foods.
  • See to it that you do not overdose on your supplement intake. Make sure to follow the proper dosage indicated on the label.
  • Read the label very carefully. Understand its content to know its possible side effects on your body.
  • Always remember that vitamin intake alone is not enough to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Dietary supplements are insufficient substitute for the vitamins and minerals that you get from vegetables, fruits and other foods.
  • Never assume that just because the product claims to promote health and normal body functions, it can prevent or reduce risks of acquiring certain diseases. The key is to have well-balanced diet coupled with exercise and healthy living.
  • Supplements can enhance a person’s diet but it cannot take the place of a healthy one.

A person taking multivitamins and other dietary supplements could reap several benefits, but be careful in choosing one because not all supplements are created the same. Some just contain placebo while others lack the vital nutrients that you need to keep your body healthy and well-functioning. If you decide to purchase a dietary supplement, make sure to keep in mind all the important points.
