Brief Survey of Recent Tech Diggs

  • [1] X.org releases 6.9 and 7.0! Huge news. This is the first update to the Linux windowing system in a decade. Be advised that if you’re using a version that makes use of RPMs or other packages (i.e., DEBs), you’re likely better off waiting—only if you know what you’re getting yourself into should you try to compile X.org 7.0 from scratch just for the heck of it.
  • Hey ladies! Tired of menstruating? Want to dink with your body like dudes dink with cars? Feel like playing God? [2] Anya could be the answer. Seriously though, I wonder about the side effects of a drug that causes women to stop menstruating, given the number of deaths with, say, [3] RU-486.
  • [4] Build the perfect KDE desktop. Linus’ recent remark about how much KDE is better than GNOME (with which I’ve agreed for years, usually under attack from the “it’s too bloated to be Linux” crowd) has sparked a recent flame war over the better desktop environment. I’m foolishly holding out for [5] Enlightenment 17, but after just under six years beyond the version 16 update in 2000, I’m beginning to think this is going the way of Duke Nukem Forever.
  • For reasons involving Baroque chromaticism and timing among other things, chiptunes are the greatest thing since the 6502 CPU. Hence, I present to you the [6] 8 Bit Peoples’ “Let it Snow.”
