Google Programmers: OO.o++

Big news, people.

If you’re not familiar with [2] OpenOffice.org, it’s an open-source (non-commercial), cross-platform implementation of an office suite whose primary competitor is Microsoft.

According to [3] C|Net News, Google is now supporting OpenOffice.org with some of its own programmers. This is an outstanding opportunity for the OSS community, not to mention for the programmers (and users!) of OpenOffice.

“We use a fair amount of open-source software at Google. We want to make sure that’s a healthy community. And we want to make sure open source preserves competitiveness within the industry,” said Chris DiBona, manager of OSS apps at Google. Now, let’s be frank. “Within the industry” basically means going up against Microsoft, who pull about 40% of their profits from the MS Office suite alone.

Stay tuned. This is going to turn into something big.
