You know those days when Loneliness and Boredom come unbidden before you and nail you to the wall of experience?

I’m thinking specifically of when the T-1000 (of loneliness, metaphorically) nails your Sarah Connor to the wall through your right shoulder and then sends a singing, accusative finger before your eyes and bids you, “Call to [your friends. Call out and go see them, or bid them come to you.]” But you know that won’t help, because when something like that hits, so unexpectedly and so deeply, the only thing that can cure it is sleep, vitamin C, and a prayer. To call on them in such a state, pre-prayer, would be to hurt them in your angst.
So I didn’t get those first two till much later in the night, but a couple of friends did actually come over; one crashed on my couch, another wrote a paper on my computer till 4AM, and I played The Legend of Zelda till 01:30.
This was also unexpected; I wasn’t really praying to see anyone, I just gave up and went upstairs. It was at that point that I was allowed to give consolation to one of my friends, who had just been let down by a girl. (Enough said, doubtless.) And then I was able to offer my computer in service to someone who needed one. How about that.
So when you call on Schwarzenegger (Christ, metaphorically—there’s a joke in there somewhere about Germans and those anointed by God but I’ll let it lie) to pump the T-1000s of Loneliness and Boredom full of exploding rounds, you might find that they come in the form of friends. Just a thought.
