Late-breaking Tech Highlights 1

Lots of little but exciting things going on lately in the tech world. Here are some of the best highlights (IMHO).

  • [1] GCC 4.0.0 released. GCC is the definitive open-source compiler, and it’s undergone lots of changes to tighten up all sorts of things. This is exciting news both for professional developers and those hobbyists/hackers who enjoy compiling their [2] programs (or entire operating systems, e.g., [3] Gentoo) from source. Scott Ladd has written a content-rich [4] review of GCC 4.0.0 as it stacks up against 3.4.3.
  • [5] LinuxWorld carries the story of the 2.6.12 kernel, with its focus on trusted computing and security as well as better hardware support. Also very promising, though I hope the x86_64 arch is better-supported….
  • AIM is going to be replaced by the now-beta [6] Triton. This is irrelevant because of [7] Gaim, of course. :)

More later!
