    x86_64 has been supported well for quite some time. I know of many, many servers running the x86_64 kernel with no problem.

    True for the kernel and server-necessary things, but I meant specifically support for compilation of certain programs from scratch, e.g., Gaim and certain MySQL applications. See specifically comments here for more info.
