Searching the other day for a replacement for Windows Media Player (because my mplayer installation is rather flaky right now … need to recompile), I ran across this sub-part of the MS Boycott site called The Alternative. Listing some alternatives to the most commonly-used apps in Windows, this is a fairly good list with an easily-navigable design, and includes things for Windows, Macintosh, and other operating systems (Amiga? Who knew?).

Notably, they mention OpenOffice.org, which I believe deserves a moment here as well. This app is the son of Sun, an Open Source version of StarOffice. OOo is a quick, highly efficient and robust office suite that’s taking a chunk out of Microsoft and is set to take even more when corporations realize they’re going to have to cough up hundreds of dollars annually just to have the option of staying current. Check out the following article for a review from the New York Times as of summer of ‘02–it’s improved significantly since then:
